Ingredients
Scale
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 cups peeled, cored, and diced tart apples (like Granny Smith)
3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted
For the Maple Glaze (Optional): 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal. Lightly grease the paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and both sugars until combined.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined. Do not overmix.
Gently fold in the diced apples and the toasted pecans.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs attached, but not wet batter. The edges should look set.
Let the apple brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
If using the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and maple syrup until smooth. Drizzle or spread the glaze over the cooled brownies.
Once cooled, use the parchment overhang to lift the brownies out of the pan. Cut into 16 squares.
Notes
For the best texture, use firm, slightly tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
To toast pecans, spread them on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
These moist apple dessert bars store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
