  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, sugar, water, and cinnamon in a large, deep skillet or pot. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the butter until it melts into the syrup.
  2. While the berries simmer, prepare the dumpling dough. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Pour in the milk and stir just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix; a slightly shaggy dough is best for tender dumplings.
  4. Increase the heat under the skillet to medium-low so the berry mixture is simmering gently. Drop the dumpling dough by rounded spoonfuls directly onto the simmering berries, leaving a little space between each one.
  5. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid. Cook for 15 to 18 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and become fluffy.
  6. Check one dumpling to ensure it is cooked through. Remove from heat.
