Make bakery-style cake donuts at home using this simple baked recipe. These old-fashioned donuts are moist, fluffy, and topped with a sweet vanilla glaze, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a standard 12-cavity donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix with a whisk or spatula until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are acceptable.
  5. Spoon or pipe the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan cavities, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the donuts cool, prepare the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the glaze is too thick.
  9. Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops of each donut into the vanilla glaze. Let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

  • For an old-fashioned texture, you can gently tap the donut pan on the counter a few times after filling to release large air bubbles.
  • If you prefer chocolate cake donuts, substitute 1/4 cup of the flour with 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • For cinnamon sugar donuts, skip the glaze. While the donuts are still warm, brush them lightly with melted butter and toss them immediately in a mixture of 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon.
