You can make rich, creamy chocolate milk right in your kitchen using simple cocoa powder. This recipe is quick, tastes better than store-bought mixes, and lets you control the sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (adjust to your taste)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together well to break up any clumps.
  2. Add about 1/4 cup of the milk to the dry mixture. Whisk vigorously until you create a smooth, thick chocolate paste. This step prevents lumps.
  3. Pour the chocolate paste into a jar or glass. Add the remaining milk and the vanilla extract.
  4. Secure the lid tightly and shake the jar well until the mixture is completely combined and smooth. Alternatively, you can whisk everything together in a bowl.
  5. Taste the chocolate milk. If you prefer it sweeter, add a little more sugar and shake again.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a refreshing chocolate beverage.

Notes

  • For a less sugar chocolate milk option, start with only 1 tablespoon of sugar and increase as needed.
  • You can make a simple chocolate syrup ahead of time by heating the cocoa, sugar, and a small amount of water until dissolved, then mixing it with cold milk later.
  • This recipe works well for kid friendly chocolate drinks; use less sugar for a wholesome chocolate drink.
