Prepare this savory, hearty Christmas breakfast casserole the night before for a stress-free holiday morning. It features sausage, Gruyère cheese, and sourdough bread baked in a rich egg custard.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pork sausage, cooked and drained
  • 1 pound sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread half of the bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Layer the cooked sausage over the bread. Sprinkle with half of the Gruyère and half of the cheddar cheese.
  4. Top with the remaining bread cubes, followed by the remaining Gruyère and cheddar cheese.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight. This is your make-ahead step.
  8. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the plastic wrap.
  9. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the Christmas breakfast casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving for your family breakfast.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, substitute Gruyère with Swiss cheese or use ham instead of sausage.
  • If you need this faster, you can bake immediately, but allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
  • This recipe serves 8 to 10 people, making it a great family breakfast casserole.
