Make classic, crispy corn dogs at home that taste like your favorite fairground treat. This easy recipe uses a sweet cornmeal batter for a perfect golden crust every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 standard hot dogs or frankfurters
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying (about 3 inches deep in a heavy pot)
  • Wooden skewers or popsicle sticks

Instructions

  1. Insert a wooden skewer into the bottom of each hot dog, leaving enough stick exposed to hold. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt for the batter.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg, milk, honey, and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Whisk until the batter is smooth. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are acceptable.
  5. Pour about 3 inches of vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Use a thermometer to check the temperature.
  6. Working in batches, dip one hot dog at a time completely into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off briefly.
  7. Carefully lower the battered hot dog into the hot oil, holding the stick until the batter sets slightly (about 30 seconds). Then, release the stick.
  8. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes, turning occasionally, until the corn dogs are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  9. Remove the corn dogs from the oil using tongs and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauces like mustard or ketchup.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, ensure your oil temperature stays at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. If the oil is too cool, the batter will absorb too much oil and become soggy.
  • If you prefer not to deep fry, you can bake these. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Place the battered hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.
  • To make mini corn dogs, cut the hot dogs in half before skewering and reduce the frying time slightly.
