Make comforting, creamy mashed sweet potatoes quickly. This versatile side dish is perfect for weeknight dinners or holiday feasts, offering a smooth texture and balanced flavor.

  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for sweeter mash)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional additions: 1 tablespoon maple syrup or 1/4 cup toasted pecans

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and quartered sweet potatoes in a large pot. Cover them with cold water and add a pinch of salt.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes completely. Return them to the hot, empty pot for one minute over low heat to allow excess moisture to evaporate. This step helps prevent watery mash.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Add the butter, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. If you prefer a sweeter dish, add the brown sugar and cinnamon now.
  5. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until mostly smooth. For the creamiest texture, use an electric hand mixer on low speed or a potato ricer. Do not overmix.
  6. Stir in any optional additions like maple syrup or pecans. Taste and adjust salt or sweetness as needed.
  7. Serve immediately as a comforting side dish for your family dinner or holiday meal.

Notes

  • For an extra creamy texture, warm the heavy cream slightly before adding it to the potatoes.
  • If you want a savory version, skip the brown sugar and cinnamon. Instead, add 1/4 cup sour cream and 1 clove of roasted garlic during the mashing process.
  • To achieve a fluffy sweet potato mash, ensure the potatoes are very dry before mashing.
