  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour one 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg until just combined.
  5. Mix in the applesauce and milk until smooth.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix the batter.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Frost with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting or dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For an even more flavorful cake, use homemade applesauce.
  • This cake freezes well once cooled; wrap it tightly before freezing.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with buttermilk.
