Make this easy Tater Tot Casserole with ground beef for a comforting, hearty meal. It is a simple, cheesy bake perfect for weeknight dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag (about 30 ounces) frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is fully cooked and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. In the skillet with the beef and onion, stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until combined.
  4. Spread the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the meat layer.
  6. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single, even layer over the cheese. Do not thaw the tots first.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown and crisp.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.

Notes

  • For a Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole variation, add 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder to the meat mixture and use Swiss cheese instead of cheddar.
  • If you want a crispier topping, bake the casserole uncovered for the entire time.
  • You can prepare this casserole completely, cover it, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Add 10 to 15 minutes to the baking time if cooking from cold.
